DiveSafe's new 'hybrid' dive programme first of its kind in Canada

School launches programme that provides students with both PADI Divemaster and Commercial Scuba certifications

DiveSafe's Professional Scuba programme is the first of its kind in Canada

DiveSafe International, based in the small city of Campbell River on Canada’s west coast, has set a first for Canadian professional diving instruction. The school’s new Professional Scuba programme is a “hybrid” that provides students with both PADI Divemaster and Commercial Scuba certifications, as well as a number of advanced underwater rescue and open water courses.

The programme – the first of its kind in Canada – is designed to provide graduates with everything they will need for an adventurous career in international diving, according to Kelly Korol, DiveSafe’s owner and director of training.

“We’re so excited to offer the Professional Scuba programme,” says Korol. “It’s the ideal programme for anyone who loves the water and wants to travel the world. Graduates will end up working in marine biology, aquaculture, engineering, seafood harvesting, underwater photography, dive resorts, tourism – you name it. It can be your ticket to working underwater anywhere in the world.”

One of Canada’s leading dive training schools, DiveSafe International has been offering professional diving instruction out of Campbell River since 2002. Instructing the new Professional Scuba programme is DiveSafe’s husband-and-wife team of Reggie Latham and Heather Kidd, who collectively boast decades of professional diving experience all over the globe. The couple recently returned to Campbell River from the Cayman Islands, where they each have diving spots named after them – “Reggie’s Rum Running Reef” and “Heather’s Hallways”.

“Our goal is to set our grads up with everything they need to succeed,” says Kidd. “They’ll get comprehensive theory and hands-on training, plus practical experience, industry connections and even work placements – be they local or international. We also manage a job board and connect our students with opportunities in commercial diving, marine biology, resorts and the film industry; we have some really amazing DiveSafe success stories.”

The 15-week Professional Scuba dual certification programme begins this April and is offered full-time in Campbell River. The course is eligible for EI and student loan funding.
