Divers on TWI/Hydroweld
wet welder training course. The growing demand in the offshore oil and gas, marine and civil engineering industries throughout the world, for certified welder divers has led to the expansion of the TWI/Hydroweld wet welder training courses into the Far East. These unique courses are run at Metalock Underwater Maintenance (PTE) Ltd Commercial Diving Training Centre in Singapore who offer the most up to date diver training facilities in the region, which includes a 4.5 metre diving tank, classrooms and conference facilities. Courses currently being offered include CSWIP, Lloyd's inspection, and Commercial diver training in addition to the wet welding courses.
Hydroweld/TWI wet welder training courses both in the UK and Singapore offer the student the highest standard coding available in the world. This coding, included in the course price, is to AWS D3.6 type 'B' welds and is independently witnessed by LRS (Lloyds Register of shipping). Successful completion of the coding will, in addition to a certificate of competence/attendance offered by TWI School of welding technology, provide the student with a traceable Welder Performance Qualification Certificate (WPQ) issued by LRS. These certificates are generally recognised throughout the world and will undoubtedly provide documentary evidence to potential clients of the individual's wet welding competence.
Although technical/theoretical wet welding instruction is given to help the student fully understand the principals of wet welding, the courses are intended to be as practical as possible, giving the student unprecedented in-water time and thus the opportunity to learn wet welding techniques using the industry standard underwater welding consumable, Hydroweld FS. Unique in-water wet welding tuition is offered by the instructors provided by Hydroweld, particularly in the early stages, to assist the student master the basics.
Students with virtually no previous welding experience have successfully completed the course; however, to ensure swift progress it is recommended that the student does have some welding experience. During the course the students have the opportunity, depending on their ability, to weld in all positions and for those students keen to progress further, modular courses can be arranged which will allow the student to complete butt and pipe welds in all positions.
Hydroweld/TWI are both experts in their fields and recognise the need to improve welder diver training standards, it is to this end they are working together with industry to develop a recognised wet welding training certification scheme, similar to that offered by CSWIP (Certification Scheme for Welding Inspection Personnel) which will give the client confidence in the knowledge and competence of the certified welder diver and which, like CSWIP, will be recognised world-wide.
"There is an enormous potential for wet welding around the world" said Mike Pett of Hydroweld, "and we regularly get involved with major projects thanks to our reputation as a world leader in this field". These projects often demand a very high standard of wet welding and although there is a number of schools training welder divers the qualifications offered often do not meet the expectations of the client. "Developing a training programme is a natural development of our business" said Hydroweld's Phil Boulter "we have the consumables, equipment and technical know-how, now we need the right calibre of personnel and to this end we have found it necessary to develop, together with The Welding Institute (TWI), a wet welder training programme catering for the high quality end of the market".
A number of scheduled courses are run throughout the year in the UK and in Singapore. 1997 has seen the training programme grow at a faster rate than had been expected with a number of additional courses being added to the schedule to cope with the demand. The next course, with places available, is in the UK at TWI (North) and is scheduled for 27th of October till 5th November 1997 followed by an additional course in Singapore from the 10th till the 21st November at Metalock Underwater Maintenance (PTE) Ltd.
